Dear School Families,

The Feast Day of All Souls is upon us!

To help our students celebrate Día de Los Muertos, Catholic Cemeteries & Mortuaries of the Archdiocese and the Office of Religious Education have compiled an online catechetical video series available at https://lacatholics.org/ddlm-resources/. Día de Los Muertos, an All Souls’ Day celebration, is a vibrant faith-based tradition that celebrates and honors the life of all the deceased through songs, prayer, and ofrendas (altars). Through the video series, students learn about the meaning of Día de Los Muertos as a celebration that commemorates the Feast of All Souls. Step by step, they will learn how to decorate sugar skulls and picture frames for photos of their departed loved ones, craft paper marigold flowers, and build a Día de Los Muertos altar with mementos of loved ones. Additionally, you can find an activity booklet at https://lacatholics.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/CC_book_2020_version2.pdf.

The videos lead up beautifully to the virtual Prayer Vigil Mass that will be led by Archbishop José H. Gomez this Sunday, November 1, at 6:00 p.m. from the outdoor courtyard of the Mausoleum of Calvary Cemetery and Mortuary in East Los Angeles for the 7th consecutive year. Then on Monday, November 2, Archbishop Gomez will preside a virtual All Souls’ Day Mass in remembrance of our departed faithful brothers and sisters, which will be live-streamed at 10:00 a.m. from Holy Cross Cemetery. These virtual celebrations offer a unique opportunity to celebrate from home a Catholic tradition that unites faith, prayer, and cultural heritage to honor the faithful departed. Due to pandemic restrictions, both celebrations will not be open to the public but will instead be live-streamed on https://lacatholics.org/ and https://www.facebook.com/lacatholics/.They will also be broadcast live on TV and online by  EWTN and EWTN Español.

I hope that you find these bilingual resources useful as you prepare to celebrate the Feast of All Souls.

Sincerely in Christ,

Mr. Xavier Jimenez
